Hazelmere is a gnome who lives on a small archipelago just east of Yanille. Hazelmere was the last surviving creator of the Grand Tree, a massive living fortress within the Gnome Stronghold. He was also an accomplished battle mage, the third advisor to King Healthorg, tree whisperer,[1] soothsayer, and telepath with a great knowledge of history and culture. Hazelmere plays a prominent role in The Grand Tree, The Eyes of Glouphrie, The Path of Glouphrie and While Guthix Sleeps quests.
There is a fairy ring near his house, the code being CLS.
During King Healthorg the Great's reign in the Fourth Age, Hazelmere replaced the second advisor to King Healthorg, Glouphrie the Untrusted. He worked with Oaknock the Engineer to construct the Grand Tree.[1] Before replacing Glouphrie as third advisor to the king, he was a companion to Spirit Trees and a frequent traveler, and through his familiarity discovered that one of their oldest trees in the Tree Gnome Stronghold, Argentor, had died. Working with Oaknock, they unveiled Glouphrie's illusion that hid his death, which led to his immediate expulsion by the shocked and furious King Healthorg.[2] At some point, he exiled himself to a small archipelago east of Yanille. Perhaps due to his connection to the Anima Mundi or in efforts to deter visitors, Hazelmere prefers talking in either Ancient Gnomish or through mind melding.[3]
The Grand Tree
Around the year 169 of the Fifth Age, the Spirit tree of the Gnome Stronghold became unusually ill. King Narnode Shareen, worried about the tree's health, tasked a passing human adventurer with finding Hazelmere and tracking down the root cause. Since Hazelmere did not like speaking the common tongue, Narnode also sent them a translation book. The adventurer found Hazelmere and asked him about the Daconia rocks, which he found and wrote back a on scroll. In it, Hazelmere believed that Narnode had sent someone to pick up daconia rocks from him, as they had come with his official seal. The adventurer quickly discovered that Glough was responsible for the tree's illness and Narnode had him removed after learning the truth.
More Gnome Problems
Sometime after the Grand Tree situation was resolved, Brimstail asked the same adventurer to speak to Hazelmere regarding Oaknock's Machine. The adventurer returned to Hazelmere, and he melded his mind with theirs to better communicate with them and revealed the purpose of the machine to them and how to use it.
At some point after this, the adventurer was looking for the explorer Longramble, where they stumbled upon a gravely ill spirit tree near the Poison Waste. The spirit tree, Incomitatus, telepathically communicated with them, prompting the adventurer to state that the manner of speaking was similar to that of Hazelmere. This unintentionally caused them to connect to Hazelmere, who was mildly annoyed at being disturbed. Upon seeing the problem, Hazelmere told them how to cure the spirit tree, which they did, pleasing him. The adventurer later explored the Poison Waste Dungeon, nearly succumbing to a mix of tar and gas by the terrorbird guards inside, but Hazelmere came in. Seeing that they were in no manner to escape, Hazelmere chose to use his seed to teleport both himself and them to safety at his home.
Hazelmere later explained to the adventurer that his time was nearing, as he foresaw a major battle in the future that would result in his death and the adventurer would play a large part in the events to come.
When the adventurer's identity was compromised by Lucien, Hazelmere saw them in trouble and ordered the group to teleport in and assist them. In the ensuing battle, Turael, Duradel, Ghommal, Sloane and Cyrisus were vaporised by Lucien. Looking at the seed pod he had used earlier to save the adventurer, Hazelmere ultimately decided against using it to save himself and took the brunt of Lucien's attack, instantly turning him into ash, much to the adventurer's horror, and they swore to avenge him.

I called him Argento, his true name was unpronouncable. He was the first Spirit Tree I had befriended, and the one I knew the best. I would sometimes travel, visiting and finding other Spirit trees, and during one such trip, I was filled with a great sense of foreboding... I felt a shadow pass over me, and a tingling in the air, even though the weather was fine and dry. Then I felt a sudden pain, as if the Anima Mundi was crying out with the loss of a favoured child... And I knew that one of the Old Ones had died, and I had lost a friend. (...) I talked to Oaknock and he was incensed. He immediately blamed Glouphrie, and although Oaknock could be rather irrational when it came to Glouphrie - they never saw eye to eye - I knew he was right this time. Glouphrie had used his magicks to hide the truth from all of us." A cutscene plays showing the confrontation involving King Healthorg, Oaknock, Glouphrie, and Hazelmere.
