Ironman Guide

Construction training on an ironman is not very different from training normally, however collecting the logs for making planks is required.

Early training: Quests

Early levels can be skipped by completing a few quests. Notably, Daddy's Home rewards a player-owned house, a crate containing 25 planks, and 544 Construction experience, which is enough to get to level 8. Unfortunately, it requires 5 bolts of cloth, which can only be purchased for 3,250 coins, making it more expensive than just purchasing a home.

Some easily available early-game quests are:

Fastest experience

Levels 16–50: Oak planks

Make Crafting table 1s, which are material-efficient leveling from 16 to 33. From 33–50, make oak larders. Nails can be purchased from the sawmill operator at the Lumber Yard.

Levels 50–99: Mounted mythical capes

At 47 Construction, mounted mythical capes become available with the completion of Dragon Slayer II, which significantly reduces the amount of teak planks needed for training. Constructing mounted mythical capes increases the experience per plank to 123 rather than 90 because of a bonus 100 experience for using the mythical cape.

Items cannot be dropped in building mode and it is possible to receive a full inventory of planks from the butler before removing the mounted mythical cape. It cannot be removed without inventory space for the cape, so a plank sack or equipable item in your inventory can be used to make space temporarily.

Other methods

Passive training: Wintertodt

Early levels can be bypassed by defeating Wintertodt while training Firemaking. Having a player-owned house is required to receive Construction experience from repairing braziers (4× player's Construction level). To maximise experience, train Construction to level 20 before doing Wintertodt. You can visit the Barbarian Outpost for 4 plank spawns near a bank.

Soloing Wintertodt will yield substantially more construction experience and loot rolls per hour at the cost of some Firemaking experience per hour.

Levels 1–99: Mahogany Homes

999999999999
100010002000

Completing Mahogany Homes contracts is an alternative training method that is more interactive and offers more experience per plank but much slower than traditional training methods. Mounted mythical capes with teak planks offer up to three times higher experience per hour than adept Mahogany Homes contracts; this time save makes up for requiring more logs and coins if you can make approximately 600,000 coins per hour or if money is not the limiting factor.

This method requires you to teleport around Gielinor and rebuild the furniture of the citizens inhabiting various cities. There are 12 houses spread over Varrock, Falador, East Ardougne and Hosidius. All cities contain 3 possible houses to refurnish, and a house requires on average 13 planks to complete. Some furniture requires a steel bar. If you have a diary cape, it is slightly faster to teleport with the diary cape to Sarah (Toby) and Ross (Two-pints). It is recommended to put your player-owned house in Hosidius since Barbara is close to the house portal. Charged rings of wealth are recommended, as the teleport to Falador Park is a bit faster than the spellbook teleport. If you have a limited amount of ring of wealth charges, it is instead recommended to use Falador Teleport. Fill your rune pouch with teleports to Varrock, Home, and Ardougne, and have a charged Xeric's Talisman equipped for Hosidius contracts. Ideally, you should only use the Falador east bank when you have a contract in Falador, and the bank in Hosidius when you have a contract at one of the two north houses (you use teleport to house for the south house). If you run out of supplies before reaching one of these banks, bank at Seers Village. You should buy the plank sack as soon as possible, and then get the outfit pieces.

This method is significantly faster on the Lunar spellbook, as players can obtain a new construction contract through the NPC Contact spell. For this method, fill your rune pouch with astral, cosmic, and air runes (or equip a staff of air) and equip a charged Xeric's talisman and a ring of wealth. Players will also need to have teleport tablets for Varrock and Ardougne (and Falador, if not using a ring of wealth).

For players without a diary cape, it is marginally faster to equip a charged chronicle and teleport to the Champion's Guild when assigned a contract in Sarah's house along Varrock's southern wall.

Levels 50–99: Teak dining benches

Teak dining benches can be built if Dragon Slayer II is not completed, otherwise mounted mythical capes are better experience per plank.

Obtaining planks

For early construction levels, regular planks can be picked up near the Barbarian Outpost or in Port Khazard as both are near a bank. Killing Tempoross early on while training Fishing or food also rewards both regular planks and oak planks from the reward pool, but not in large quantities.

Teak or mahogany logs can also be passively obtained via Managing Miscellania every day. If collecting maple logs for Fletching, put 5 workers on teak or mahogany Woodcutting. Mahogany is faster but more expensive and teak is only recommended if attempting to save some money on Construction training.

Wintertodt supply crates can provide a decent supply of various logs as well depending on the player's Woodcutting level.

High-level players can also get Construction supplies from combat activities such as the Chambers of Xeric, Zulrah, and Callisto.

The most consistent way of obtaining planks of any type is by cutting the logs and then having a player-owned house butler convert them into planks and bank them for you. For the fastest possible gathering and experience rates is by using 1.5-tick woodcutting when gathering player-grown teak or mahogany logs on Fossil Island. If training Woodcutting simultaneously, make sure you get the most anima-infused bark to buy sawmill vouchers as you can redeem one sawmill voucher to get one extra plank for free, depending on the type of log in the inventory.

Methods

Method Requirements Items needed Procedure
Butler (PvP world)

All planks

Magic 45 Magic

Butler

In a PvP world, teleport to Camelot to the bank chest in the safezone. Get the logs then Teleport to House. Give the butler logs to take to the sawmill then teleport back to Camelot to repeat the process. The butler automatically banks the planks.

This is the fastest method of making planks, yielding ~7,000 planks per hour, but with additional cost of the butler services.

Warning: If your house is not locked or private chat setting is not Off, players can enter your house and attack you. If they do, leaving or re-teleporting to your house will remove them.

Butler (Farming Guild)

All planks

Farming 85

Construction 75
Butler

Using the Farming Guild bank, withdraw 26 logs, then travel to your player-owned house using a spirit tree. Give the butler logs to take to the sawmill then take the spirit tree back to the farming guild to repeat the process. The butler automatically banks the planks.

This is slower than the PvP world teleporting method but saves on law runes and avoids the risk of misclicking and leaving the safe zone around the Camelot bank chest, which may be valuable to hardcore Ironmen.

Butler (Rimmington)

Oak planks

Woodcutting 15 (Woodcutting 41+ recommended)

Construction 50

With a player-owned house in Rimmington, cut oak trees north-east of the house portal, enter your house, call the demon butler, and send him to the sawmill. Exit the house and the butler will automatically send the planks to the bank.

The process can be made slightly faster by using tick manipulation, however this is slightly more expensive due to the butler costs (as fewer logs are deposited per trip) and requires significantly more effort.

Butler (Ape Atoll)

Teak planks

Woodcutting 35 (Woodcutting 61+ recommended)

Construction 67
Magic 90 Magic
Completion of Monkey Madness I

Teleport to Ape Atoll Dungeon, climb up to the surface, and cut the teak trees to the east. Teleport to house with a tablet, call the demon butler and send him to the sawmill. Teleport back to Ape Atoll, and the butler will automatically send the planks to the bank. If Monkey Madness II is not completed, equip a greegree when cutting the logs and unequip it before teleporting to the player-owned house.

The process can be made slightly faster by using tick manipulation, however this is slightly more expensive due to the butler costs (as fewer logs are deposited per trip) and requires significantly more effort.

Butler (Fossil Island)

Mahogany planks

Woodcutting 50 (Woodcutting 61+ recommended)

Farming 55
Agility 70 for the hole shortcut
Construction 70 for the revitalisation pool
Completion of Bone Voyage
Completion of hard tasks in the Kandarin Diary (recommended)

Teleport to the Digsite with the Digsite pendant, run east, quick-travel to Fossil Island and use the Agility shortcut to the hardwood patches. Cut mahogany trees using the 1.5-tick method of tick manipulation. Teleport to House, call a demon butler, and send him to the sawmill. Use the pool for run energy restoration if needed and teleport back to the Digsite. When the Digsite pendant has only one charge left, teleport to a bank after sending the butler to a sawmill, grab a fully charged one, and teleport to the Digsite.

This is the fastest method for banking Construction; at 99 Woodcutting and with good performance it is possible to get up to 110,000 Woodcutting and 120,000 banked Construction experience per hour. The method also works for teak, but mahogany is faster overall since more Construction experience is banked per trip, and using mahogany planks for Construction training is faster than teaks.

Alternatively, one can simply bank the logs at the museum camp, but one will have to plankmake the logs later and use stamina potions.

Sawmill (Woodcutting Guild)

Oak planks

Woodcutting 60 Cut oak trees in the eastern side of the Woodcutting Guild, convert the oak logs into oak planks in the sawmill and deposit them in the bank deposit box.
Sawmill (Woodcutting Guild)

Oak, teak and mahogany planks

Woodcutting 60 This requires having logs from Managing Miscellania already, making this a fairly efficient and inexpensive method. The plank sack helps with efficiency.

With an empty plank sack, a large amount of coins, and the rest with teak or mahogany logs. Run from the Woodcutting Guild bank to the sawmill, convert the logs into planks, and put them in the plank sack. Cut an inventory of oak logs at the adjacent oak trees, convert into oak planks, and bank.

This method yields an equal number of oak planks and teak/mahogany planks more quickly than doing them individually.

Sawmill (Varrock)

Oak planks

Woodcutting 30 (Woodcutting 41+ recommended)

Firemaking 40
Completion of Enlightened Journey

Store 100 willow logs in the crate near the balloon transport system. Start at Castle Wars and take the balloon to Varrock Lumber Yard. Cut the trees to turn into planks until a full inventory is obtained. Pay the Sawmill operator to cut the logs into planks. Head north into the Wilderness to fill the looting bag with planks. Exit the Wilderness to repeat the process until the loot bag and inventory are full, then dueling ring back to Castle Wars. Alternatively, with Firemaking 60 and Woodcutting 60 , cut the yew trees south of the Lumber Yard and take the balloon back to Castle Wars.

You may instead choose to simply teleport to Castle Wars, cut oak trees near the balloon, take the balloon to Varrock, make the planks, and teleport back to Castle Wars to repeat, as this may be faster at the cost of more rings of dueling. This method does not require the looting bag.

Sawmill (Prifddinas)

Teak or mahogany planks

Completion of Song of the Elves Even with a plank sack, cutting logs at Fossil Island may be marginally faster, but this method also grants you crystal shards and the opportunity to grab nearby crystal implings. Doing this method on designated Forestry worlds also lets you participate in frequent Forestry events. After obtaining anima-infused bark from these events, it is beneficial to buy sawmill vouchers to save money and time chopping logs and converting them to planks.

Teleport to Prifddinas using a spirit tree and run directly east. You can cut either Teak or Mahogany logs here, use the nearby sawmill to make planks (which also saves you a fee from your butler), and then add them to your plank sack to get two inventories per trip. Bank your planks and repeat by using a Farming cape, Grand Exchange teleport, or simply run to the nearby bank in Prifddinas.

Tempoross

Normal and oak planks

Fishing 35 Defeat Tempoross and fish at the reward pool to receive normal and oak planks amongst other resources.
Tackle organised crime

All planks

Decent combat stats Talk to Captain Ginea in the Shayzien Encampment, south-east of the bank chest to obtain information on when and where gangs will appear.

Hop worlds to gather info on them all to efficiently use a single location. Go there. When the gangs appear, kill all of the members, hop worlds, and repeat. Gangsters drop every type of plank noted.

Tips for converting logs into planks via your player-owned house butler

Stop your butler from getting stuck on your house portal: When summoning your butler to give them logs, they may occasionally get stuck on the western corner of the house portal instead of walking directly to you. To fix this, your house portal must be located in the standard garden tile (as opposed to a formal garden). Then all you have to do is plant reeds in this tile, and then rotate your garden so that the reeds are West of your house portal.

Banking too quickly for your butler: Sometimes the butler will be waiting for you at your house, having not taken the planks to your bank. This has to do with your house instance not closing; the amount this happens can be reduced by using a higher population world, this is because the instance will close quicker. If you find yourself in this situation you can manually use a log from your inventory on him, this will make him send the planks he's holding to your bank while taking your logs to the sawmill. You should have a house layout that loads in 2 ticks while doing this method.
