The steel knife is a throwing knife that requires a Ranged level of 5 to wield. It is stronger than an iron knife but weaker than a black knife. To create steel knives, the player must have at least 37 Smithing. Each steel bar will create 5 steel knives and give the player 37.5 Smithing experience. They can be poisoned and can be wielded with a shield or god book for protection.

Throwing knives are among the fastest weapons in the game (along with darts), and are commonly used for PKing or training Ranged. Steel knives can be purchased from Martin Thwait's Lost and Found shop in the Rogues' Den with 50 Thieving and 50 Agility. A single steel knife also spawns in the cave of the Kendal located north of the Mountain Camp.
