A melee pure is a type of free-to-play combat pure account that focuses on training melee combat skills such as Attack and Strength. Along with ranged-melee hybrids, melee pures are one of the most common free-to-play account builds for 1-vs-1 player-versus-player combat.

Skills

Primary

Melee pures train Strength Strength without restriction.

Secondary

Melee pures train Attack attack up to 40 to gain access to the rune weapons.

These pures can also train Ranged Ranged up to 40 to be able to wear the green d'hide chaps and green d'hide vambraces.

Additionally, Magic Magic can be trained without affecting the combat level to gain access to the utility spells, as well as to improve magic defence. To minimize Hitpoints experience, magic should be trained with methods such as splashing, curses, teleporting, enchanting jewellery and alchemy. A combat level calculator can be used to make sure that the combat level is based on the melee skills rather than magic. With 40 Attack and 99 Strength, Magic can be trained up to 93 level without affecting the overall combat level.

On very low combat levels, leather armour might be preferable to iron armour due to its higher magic defence bonus, as combat spells can be common early on. Crush defence bonuses can also be taken into account to combat the strength pures.

Both studded chaps and green d'hide chaps should also be used as soon as 20 or 40 ranged levels are reached respectively, as they offer better overall defensive bonuses than iron platelegs and iron plateskirt. Additionally, studded chaps offer a higher slash defence bonus than the green d'hide chaps, making them superior for melee-only fights. Leather boots can be used instead of fighting, fancy or fancier boots, since they are easier to obtain and their bonuses are rather negligible either way.

Both 2h swords and battleaxes are viable knockout weapons. Two-handed swords have higher strength and accuracy bonuses, while battleaxes are one-handed and 1 tick faster.

Monk robes can also be worn to slow down the prayer consumption.

3-tick weapons such as goblin paint cannon can be considered for gaining momentum and performing unexpected combos.

Training

Melee pures typically train Attack only high enough to unlock certain tiers of weapons such as rune. After reaching 40 Attack level and unlocking rune weapons, most free-to-play melee pures no longer train this skill and focus on Strength instead.

Melee skills can be trained with members-only methods to avoid gaining Hitpoints experience.

Magic can be trained without affecting the combat level with methods that do not grant any Hitpoints experience. While Magic is not used offensively in 1-vs-1 combat, it is still worth training as it improves magic defence and grants access to utility spells such as teleports, Snare and Tele Block. Ranged can be trained up to 40 level to gain access to the green d'hide armour.

Combat style

Melee pures use a quick melee attack to wear the opponents down, typically with a scimitar of the highest available tier. Knockout attacks are performed by slower, more powerful weapons such as a two-handed sword or a battleaxe. The usual strategy is to switch to the KO weapon after bringing the opponent's hitpoints low enough so that they cannot outheal the incoming damage. Techniques such as fake eats, emote stalls, delaying and backstepping can improve the chances of a successful KO.

3-tick melee weapons are also somewhat viable alternatives to the scimitars. In particular, movement stall of the goblin paint cannon can be leveraged to deliver unexpected combos.

Since melee pures are vunerable to farcasting and binding spells such as Snare, they are not well suited for multi-combat areas or no honour fights.

Variants

On early combat levels, following a strength pure build allows to achieve higher maximum melee hits thanks to the access to the rune warhammer.

Prayer

Melee pures commonly train Prayer to 31, which unlocks Ultimate Strength necessary to maximize melee damage. Although low level melee pures might choose not to train Prayer, 13 and 31 are the most commonly used prayer levels overall.

Viable Prayer levels include:

Low attack

Early on, strength pures have an edge over classic melee pures due to the higher maximum melee hits with access to the rune warhammers. Players might consider following the strength pure build initially until reaching higher combat levels where accuracy becomes more important, and the difference between the maximum melee hits of strength pures and classic pures is not as drastic.

Progression

Melee pures can be easily converted to ranged-melee hybrids by training Ranged. In fact, ranged-melee pures can fight with the same combat style as melee pures by using only melee weapons. However, keep in mind that maxed hybrids have a slightly higher combat level (78 as opposed to 73) due to 99 Ranged and 44 Prayer levels necessary to maximize the damage.
