Battleaxes are one of several powerful melee weapons that can deal large amounts of damage. Although they can hit hard, battleaxes have low attack speed. They are stronger than longswords, but have slower attack speeds. Battleaxes are also weaker than two-handed swords, but slightly faster. Players can buy some of the types of battleaxes at Brian's Battleaxe Bazaar in Port Sarim, at Bob's Brilliant Axes in Lumbridge, or from trading with other players.

Battleaxes have very high Strength bonus with only the two-handed sword beating them. This is a good weapon for players who neglect their Strength relative to their Attack. The key to the effective use of a battleaxe is accuracy, which is why it is important to have a decent Attack level and attack bonus.

The Dharok's greataxe differs from the other battleaxes as it possesses a slower attack speed and is two-handed.
