The Wintertodt (/ˈwɪntərtɒd/ win-ter-tod[1]) is a minigame-style boss that is fought using skills rather than combat. It is located in the Northern Tundras in Great Kourend, bringing a storm of perpetual winter and unfathomable cold. According to the look-out, it is unclear what the Wintertodt actually is, but its ability to alter the weather to extremely low temperatures has earned it notoriety among the people of Great Kourend.
Players must assist the Order of the Sacred Flame, a special group of Arceuus mages, to keep the Wintertodt at bay. As servants of the sacred flame, only they know the spells required to subdue the Wintertodt, so they are heavily relied upon in the defence of Great Kourend. While the pyromancer's magical abilities are extraordinary, their skills in other areas are limited, and thus require assistance from skilled adventurers.
In order to help subdue the Wintertodt, players are required to have at least level 50 in Firemaking. Skill levels in Herblore, Fletching, Woodcutting and Construction do not affect the speed of their related activities at all, however having higher levels grant more experience (see experience rates section).
Subduing the Wintertodt while earning at least 500 points is a requirement for the medium Kourend & Kebos Diary.
The Wintertodt is considered to be a boss, not a minigame, and dying here is unsafe. The normal rules for loss of items applies, and Hardcore Ironmen will lose their Hardcore status if they die here.
Ironmen are eligible for rewards from Wintertodt when defeating it alongside other players.
History
While it is not clear what the Wintertodt is, there are multiple theories by various people in the Wintertodt Camp. Ignisia believes it to be an evil spirit,[2] Ish the Navigator believes it felt the power of the Dark Altar and attacked Great Kourend to seek it,[3] while Undor believes it to be a powerful fire spirit.[4]
During the 2nd decade (1,400 years ago), the Wintertodt (known back then as the Winter Beast) ravaged the lands north of Kourend, causing them to experience perpetual winter, with livestock and crops freezing. It continued to ravage the Northern Tundras for another three decades, with Great Kourend's attempts to subdue it unsuccessful.
On 1,778 - 5 (1,360 years ago), fearing the Winter Beast might eventually ravage the kingdom, Lord Arceuus I ordered the construction of the Arceuus Library,[5] filled with texts, documents and research from all cities, in order to preserve the history of Great Kourend. Meanwhile, the most important texts were stored in the Library Historical Archive, a repurposed chamber of the Tower of Magic, for further study and additional protection.
On 1,748 - 7 (1,340 years ago), a master Lovakengj smith named Dinh formulated a plan to defeat the Winter Beast. Meeting with the Order of the Sacred Flame, Dinh believed that the roots of the Bruma tree, a magical tree lying within the heart of the Northern Tundras, can emit the heat required to subdue the Winter Beast. Dinh proposed to construct a large prison in which to lure the Beast in, and seal it with a large set of doors made from various materials, including lovakite and bark from the Bruma tree, with enchantments placed by the Order.[6]
With Lord Lovakengj II approving of the plans, the prison's construction was completed 800 days later, with known casualties of sixteen Order members and two scouts. On 2,548 - 7, after five decades, the Winter Beast was successfully imprisoned and sealed behind the Doors of Dinh,[7] with Lord Lovakengj II declaring the day as Winter's End.
Over a thousand years later, the Doors have begun to fail due to being damaged by someone or something, creating a small hole in the doors. Due to this, the Wintertodt has been drawing a small amount of power into the prison.[8] This hole is fixed by Undor during The Forsaken Tower quest after being given Dinh's hammer. Despite this, the doors were already damaged for such a time that the Wintertodt has already gained a lot of power,[9] and Undor believes that it will be many years before things return to normal.[10]
It is later revealed in A Kingdom Divided that the doors were sabotaged by one of the Pyromancers sent to subdue the winter beast, with collusion from Xamphur, Xeric's closest ally. It is not known what interested Xamphur, but during the quest, the Tasakaal create a shielding potion for the adventurer to apply to the doors to prevent further damage.
Getting there
There are four main methods for travelling to the Wintertodt. These options, ordered from fast to slow, are:
- Players can reach the camp via games necklace, provided they have already taken Veos's ship to Great Kourend once.
- Players can choose the Northern Tundras option in the Lovakengj Minecart Network which brings them just southeast of Wintertodt.
- Players can use the fairy ring code CIS and walk west along the path.
- Players can use the Arceuus Home Teleport by switching to the Arceuus spellbook by speaking with Tyss. This can be done with no requirements and is particularly useful for players who chose to start their Ironman accounts by training at Wintertodt, as there are few fast travel methods at low levels for iron accounts.
Bank chest
There is a tent with a bank chest just east of the game necklace teleport location. Players can use this bank to prepare for the fight, or as a close bank to a teleport for tasks such as Slayer and farm runs. Note that players fighting the Wintertodt will need to leave the game in order to use the bank.
Official worlds
The following official worlds are assigned to Wintertodt:
World | Location | Members | Activity |
---|---|---|---|
307 | United States (west) | Wintertodt | |

Requirements
- Level 50 is required to participate in the Wintertodt fight.
- Completion of Druidic Ritual is recommended to pick bruma herbs, which are used to create rejuvenation potions. If not, players can have Brew'ma do so on their behalf.
- Owning a player-owned house is required to gain Construction experience from repairing broken braziers.
- Items:
- A bronze axe or better (a bronze axe is obtainable from a crate)
- A knife (obtainable in the Wintertodt)
- A hammer (obtainable in the Wintertodt)
- A tinderbox (obtainable in the Wintertodt) or bruma torch.
- Unfinished rejuvenation potions (obtainable in the Wintertodt)
- Warm or winter-themed clothing (optional, highly recommended)
- Food (optional, highly recommended) and Hitpoints regenerating items (Hitpoint cape or Regen bracelet (optional and harder to obtain))
Fighting the Wintertodt
The Wintertodt cannot be attacked by conventional combat. Instead, players must help the pyromancers drain its energy by lighting and maintaining the braziers around the prison. To do this, chop the roots of the Bruma tree found near the braziers to obtain bruma roots, optionally fletch them with a knife into more potent bruma kindling, then add them to the braziers.
Upon entering the Doors of Dinh, players can take supplies provided by the pyromancers from crates: bronze axes, hammers, knives, tinderboxes, and unfinished rejuvenation potions. Beside the crates (and on the east and west walls of the prison) are Sprouting Roots, which may be picked to obtain bruma herbs that can be combined with the unfinished potions to make the rejuvenation potion, for use when fighting the Wintertodt (the fight need not be started to do this). Completion of Druidic Ritual is required to pick the herb and create the potion, though players can have Brew'ma do so on their behalf.
The warmth meter, visible on the HUD at the top left of the player's game client, acts as the player's health when inside the prison. Dropping to 0% warmth will cause instant death. The Wintertodt will periodically damage the player's warmth due to its seeping cold (as indicated by the warm damage hitsplat () and a filtered chat message) and will also occasionally send snowstorms that damage the warmth of all players in their vicinity.
Players can restore their warmth by eating any type of food that heals at least 4 Hitpoints (such as a bite of cake), which will restore 35% warmth, or by drinking a dose of rejuvenation potion, which will restore 30% warmth. Players will also naturally regenerate 8% warmth per minute, with an additional 1% regenerated for each piece of warm clothing worn (up to 4). Various health regeneration methods, such as Rapid Heal, regen bracelets, and Heal Other, will aid warm regeneration further as well. A ring of life will activate if warmth drops below 10%. If the player's warmth is reduced to 0%, they will automatically die.
The Wintertodt can also damage pyromancers and destroy braziers. Being stood next to a brazier as it is broken will also cause damage to the player. The pyromancers do not have a lot of health and will usually be incapacitated after taking three hits from the Wintertodt. If the pyromancer falls to 0 health, they cannot drain the Wintertodt's energy, and once the brazier goes out it cannot be relit until players heal the pyromancer. A damaged brazier can be repaired with a hammer. The Pyromancers can be healed via the NPC's "Heal" option, requiring a dose of rejuvenation potion.
Damaging the Wintertodt
The Wintertodt will get weakened by the power of the bruma flames that are channeled by the pyromancers. Thus it is important to keep the braziers lit and the pyromancers in good condition for the duration of the fight.
The braziers can be lit with a tinderbox or bruma torch. The flames have to be fueled by adding bruma roots or bruma kindling. Bruma roots can be obtained by chopping the bruma roots, which are located close to each brazier. Players can choose to fletch bruma roots into bruma kindling with a knife.
Wintertodt's attacks
The Wintertodt uses four different types of attacks during the fight:
- Standard attack - All individual players will take periodic, mostly random damage. This damage will usually be taken about every 10–20 seconds, but can rarely strike multiple times in a row relatively rapidly, making it hard to heal without adequate food. The frequency of this attack lessens if at least three braziers are maintained, and if the Wintertodt's remaining energy is lower.
- Brazier attack - Braziers will shatter when clusters of snow fall on them. A player standing next to a brazier when it shatters will take the same amount of damage as if snow had fallen on them. This can be avoided by watching for falling snowflakes above the brazier, which appear shortly before the attack hits.
- Area attack - Snow will occasionally fall in a 3x3 area centred on a targeted player. This can be easily avoided by watching out for the clusters of falling snowflakes and stepping out of the area. If not avoided, it will deal roughly double the damage done from the periodic effect. This attack cannot target a player that is standing next to an obstacle.
The amount of time between these attacks is random.[11] When the Wintertodt's attempts to do a standard attack, a random number between zero and the maximum health of the Wintertodt is picked, which is then compared against its current health. If the randomly picked number is lower, the attack will proceed.[12] A similar process is used to determine whether the Wintertodt attacks one of the braziers or pyromancers: a random number is rolled up to the Wintertodt's maximum health, and compared against its remaining health. If the randomly rolled number is higher, an attack against a brazier or pyromancer goes through, making those more frequent at lower energy levels.[13]
Throughout the fight, the player will also take intermittent passive damage as the cold of the Wintertodt begins to seep into their bones. The damage taken is based on the player's total Firemaking level, and is drastically reduced while wearing warm or winter-themed clothing to a minimum of around 10-15% of the player's warmth meter. This damage has a cooldown of 10 ticks (6 seconds) so as to not heavily disrupt fletching bruma roots.
A minimum of four of these warm items need to be equipped in order to receive the best possible protection. Ironmen can use parts of the clue hunter outfit and a staff of fire, to add up to four total pieces; until they acquire pieces of the Pyromancer outfit.
The following formulas can be used to determine the amount of damage taken, rounded down.[14]
Attack type | Formula |
---|---|
Standard attack | |
Brazier attack | |
Area attack | |

HUD
Upon entering the Wintertodt area, a HUD will appear in the top left of the screen. There are several icons on the HUD:
- Unlit fire - The brazier has not yet been lit.
- Lit fire - The brazier has been lit.
- Crafting icon - The brazier has been damaged and needs to be repaired.
- Red magic hat - The pyromancer at that brazier has been incapacitated and needs to be healed.
Reward points
The rewards for defeating the Wintertodt are based on the player's reward points acquired throughout the fight. Players must collect a minimum of 500 points in order to be rewarded for their efforts. The reward will consist of rolls at the Reward Cart (see rewards section) and Firemaking experience (100x the player's level in Firemaking).
There is no current known limit to the number of rewards points that can be earned in a single fight.
Players earn experience and reward points based on the activities they perform during the battle. The following activities provide reward points:
Activity | Skill involved | Points |
---|---|---|
Lighting braziers | 25 | |
Adding Bruma roots to a brazier | / | 10 |
Adding Bruma kindling to a brazier | / / | 25 |
Repairing destroyed braziers | 25 | |
Healing pyromancers | 75 |
Experience rates
Skilling activities that contribute to subduing the Wintertodt grant experience in the corresponding skill according to the following list:
- Lighting a brazier - 6x player's Firemaking level
- Cutting a bruma root - 0.3x player's Woodcutting level
- Feeding a bruma root into a brazier - 3x player's Firemaking level
- Fletching a bruma root into a bruma kindling - 0.6x player's Fletching level
- Feeding a bruma kindling into a brazier - 3.8x player's Firemaking level
- Fixing a broken brazier - 4x player's Construction level, provided they already own a player-owned house
- Creating a rejuvenation potion - 0.1x player's Herblore level
- Subduing the Wintertodt with at least 500 points earned - 100x player's Firemaking level
The following assumes a player is on a Wintertodt mass world and not doing a solo run, where Firemaking experience rates will be ~20% lower in exchange for higher rewards and Woodcutting/Construction experience.
Players will gain up to 2,000 Construction experience an hour at level 99 Construction from fixing the brazier, scaling proportionally to player's Construction level.
A player will need to subdue the Wintertodt around 670 times to achieve 99 Firemaking using bruma kindling (based on a player earning 800 points per kill). Comparatively, a player must subdue the Wintertodt roughly 540 times to achieve 99 Firemaking using bruma roots.

Rewards
Succeeding in subduing the Wintertodt with a minimum of five hundred points will reward players with Firemaking experience (Firemaking level * 100), as well as being able to search the reward cart. The cart will initially have two rewards inside, and every 500 additional points will guarantee an extra reward. Additional points over each 500 point threshold give a linearly scaled percentage chance for an extra reward. For example, 1200 points would guarantee 3 rewards, plus a 40% chance at getting a fourth reward.
The player's skill levels will determine the rewards the player gets. High levelled players will get rarer rewards, with lower levelled rewards becoming less common the higher the player's level in that skill is. At the highest point, low levelled rewards are removed from the drop table. While players with low levels in those skills can get rare rewards, the drop rate is very low. According to Mod Ash, the herb, ore, fish, uncut gem, seed drops, and logs are based on the player's Herblore, Mining, Fishing, Crafting, Farming, and Woodcutting levels respectively,[15] at the time of opening the crates.

Trivia
- Upon release, the Wintertodt's table was much more profitable and was changed several days after release. The Wintertodt's drop table was soon nerfed yet again due to player feedback on its still-generous reward table, primarily in seeds such as ranarr (the increased supply of which resulted in their price crashing). The new drops became based on the player's levels in the skills the items were related to.
- When you examine the Doors of Dinh, it will say "Hold the door!". This is a reference to S06E05 "The Door" from the HBO show Game of Thrones.
- The Wintertodt was created by Mods Ed, Maz, West, and Ian.[16]
- The "dying" animation of Pyromancers next to braziers is identical to that of Lunar Spell Dream.
- On October 25th 2024 Mod Kirby referenced a "Red Herring"[17] recently added to the Wintertodt during the recent activity update on October 9th 2024. What this references is currently unknown.
