Bryophyta (/ˌbraɪoʊˈfaɪtə/, BRY-oh-FY-tə), the Moss Giantess, is a moss giant boss who can be found in her lair in the Varrock Sewers. Bryophyta's lair is located just north of where the moss giants reside in the sewers, accessible either through the Varrock Sewers itself or by the agility shortcut from the Edgeville Dungeon. (51 Agility required)

In order to access Bryophyta's lair, the player must obtain a mossy key from a moss giant. Each mossy key permits only one attempt, similar to accessing Obor's lair with a giant key.

Bryophyta drops Bryophyta's essence, which is used to make Bryophyta's staff. This item can store nature runes, and has a chance to not consume them when casting a spell that uses them. It cannot be obtained in any other way besides trading with players.

Strategy

To access Bryophyta's lair, players will need a knife or a slash weapon to cut through the web if approaching via the Varrock Sewers. Members with level 51 Agility can bypass this by using the agility shortcut near Vannaka in the Edgeville Dungeon.

Unlike Obor’s chambers, where he is confined in a small pit, players are taken directly to Bryophyta’s chambers, where she attacks on sight. It is recommended to activate Protect from Magic before entering, or immediately upon entry.

In members' worlds, Bryophyta can poison players, starting at 8 damage. It is advisable to bring poison protection, as she ignores protection prayers.

During the fight, Bryophyta may summon three growthlings. While they are weak, they must be killed because Bryophyta is immune to all damage (except poison and venom) while they are alive. To finish them off, players need to use an Axe or Secateurs (not wield them) after reducing them to 1 hitpoint. A blessed axe will not work. If no axe is brought, players can take a bronze axe from the pile of logs in the lair. Bryophyta can only summon one batch of growthlings at a time but can summon more after the previous ones are defeated.

F2P players should wear green d'hide armour for its magic defense, along with a rune kiteshield and rune full helm for optimal protection against her attacks. God armours like Guthix armour offer a slight advantage with a +1 prayer bonus per piece and are only marginally more expensive than rune armour. Offensively, a rune scimitar is recommended for its strength bonus. Players should have at least 50 strength, attack, and defense before attempting to fight Bryophyta.

Ranging Bryophyta is the best strategy for mid-level F2P players, with recommended stats of 60 ranged, 40 defense, and 37 prayer. The ideal setup includes green d'hide armour, a coif, an amulet of power, and a maple shortbow with adamant arrows. Maintaining a safe distance is crucial, as she won’t move towards players and won’t use melee attacks if they are out of her reach. Using Protect from Magic will further minimize damage. Magic is only viable for members, who can wear void knight or elite void knight gear with the void mage helm.

Note that, although Bryophyta is the moss giant boss, she has no weakness to fire-based magic spells, unlike other moss giants.

• Bryophyta is the scientific name for mosses.
• The update which introduced Bryophyta also made Antipoison potions available to free-to-play players and able to be purchased from the Apothecary in Varrock.
