The dark totem is an item that can be created by combining the dark totem base, dark totem middle, and dark totem top. The totem pieces are dropped in that order and duplicates drop after all three are obtained. It is used on the altar in the centre of the Catacombs of Kourend to access the lower level of the catacombs to fight Skotizo. The totem is consumed when using it on the altar regardless of the outcome of the fight.

All three components can be found by killing monsters (excluding ghosts) in the Catacombs of Kourend. Superior slayer monsters have a 100% chance of dropping a totem piece; all others have a chance equal to $1/(500-H)$, where $H$ is the monster's Hitpoints. Therefore to obtain components most quickly, a player should kill whatever monster optimises their total damage per second (including bank runs) with the gear they have available. XP per hour can be used as a rough substitute for optimising DPS, though some monsters in the catacombs (such as dragons) have an XP bonus.

Assembling the dark totem results in a chatbox message stating You bring the totem pieces together with a click. It looks kind of like an arcane key and pulses with dark power in your hand.

A fully-assembled dark totem can also be rarely obtained from Skotizo.

A player uses the dark totem on the altar in the centre of the Catacombs.

Trivia

• Previously, the High Level Alchemy value of a dark totem was 6. This was changed sometime in late 2016 to its current value of 270.
• The first week after the release of the Dark totem, the totem pieces were a more common drop than currently, so that players could stock up on Dark totems in anticipation of Skotizo's release.
