The Death Altar is a runic altar upon which death runes are crafted from pure essence, providing 10 Runecraft experience per essence imbued. Level 65 Runecraft and completion of the quest Mourning's End Part II is required to craft death runes.

Players may create a death tiara here by using either a death talisman or a tiara on the altar whilst having both in their inventory, granting 50 Runecraft experience. A catalytic tiara can also be created here by using a catalytic talisman and gold tiara, granting 42.5 Runecraft experience.

Upon entering the Death Altar, the music track La Mort plays.

</mapframe> The entrance to the altar can be found on the bottom level of the Temple of Light. After completion of Mourning's End Part II, the altar can also be accessed through the Abyss.

To enter the mysterious ruins, players either have to use a death talisman on the ruins, or click "Enter" on the ruins while wearing a death tiara. Alternatively, a catalytic talisman or tiara can be used.

As the altar is one of the least-accessible in terms of distance from a bank, it's recommended to use the Abyss in order to craft a large amount of runes.

The Ruins

Entering the ruins by walking requires entering the Temple of Light with a crystal trinket and using the following directions.

1. Go up the stairs at the main entrance.
2. Go south and up the ladder.
3. Go to the centre of the temple.
4. Climb down the next stairs twice.
5. Rotate the mirror to open the light door.

Note: When leaving, remember to rotate the mirror again for future visits.

The Underground Pass

Alternatively, the Death Altar can be entered from the dwarven camp in the Underground Pass. This is also a way to enter this area if you have forgotten to rotate the mirror when exiting through the ruins. The run takes around 2 minutes and doesn't require a Crystal trinket.

1. Make your way to the western entrance to the Underground Pass. (Teleport to Lletya or Prifddinas.)
2. Go down the well.
3. Make your way to the lower level (either by falling on a jump or by making it to the stairs at the southern end of the map).
4. Go to the dwarf camp in the south-west corner of the map.
5. Descend the cave in the south-west corner of the dwarf camp.

Trivia

• The main music, La Mort, is French for "Death".
• The ability to sell cats to the citizens of West Ardougne for death runes foreshadowed that the Death Altar is located near West Ardougne.
• The area existed in-game alongside all other Runic altars when the skill was launched, but not made accessible until 2005.
