The eldritch nightmare staff is a staff that is created by attaching an eldritch orb to the nightmare staff granting it a prayer restoring special attack. Requiring level 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield, it can autocast offensive standard spells as well as Ancient Magicks. Like the Nightmare staff it gives a 15% bonus in magic damage. The upgraded staff is untradeable, but it can be reverted to its tradeable components at any time. If lost on death in the Wilderness, the killer will receive the staff and the orb.

Special attack

A player performing the eldritch nightmare staff's special attack, Invocate.

The eldritch nightmare staff has a special attack, Invocate, that consumes 55% of the player's special attack energy to hit the target for a high amount of damage, and restores the caster's prayer points by 50% of the damage dealt.

Invocate can boost the caster's prayer points above their prayer level, up to a maximum of 120; however, unlike the special attack of the ancient mace, using it against a combat dummy in a player-owned house combat room will not result in any prayer points restored.

Similar to the Saradomin godsword, Invocate too is based on potential damage rolled, allowing it to restore health and prayer even if a monster has immunity to conventional weaponry. For example, if the eldritch nightmare staff would have hit a 40 on the kurask (which would result in 0 damage because it is not a leaf-bladed weapon, broad bolt or Magic Dart), it would still give the player 20 prayer points. The same also applies to any killing blows by the special attack; if a target had 2 hitpoints remaining and was struck with a special hit that would have dealt 50 damage, the player would still be given 25 prayer points. The special attack will only damage Aviansie if an autocast spell has been selected, giving the message "The Aviansie is flying too high for you to attack using melee." if a melee attack style is being used.

When calculating the max hit, Invocate acts like any other spell. The spell's max hit is calculated first and then rounded down. All magic damage gear, including the +15% from the staff is calculated separately. Because the staff has a magic damage bonus, the max hit seen in-game will always be higher than the spell's max hit. The max hit varies with visible Magic level according to the formula below. The spell's max hit is limited to, at most, 44. This means that even though the max hit is based on the player's magic level, boosting above magic level 97 will not increase the max hit. It can be increased though by using additional magic damage gear including the Slayer helmet (i) when on a slayer task.

Uses

Players may use the weapon's special attack for training as it will greatly reduce prayer usage over time. It is particularly effective on slayer tasks that require protection prayers. While its special attack allows for very effective prayer restoration, it does not heal the player like those of the Saradomin godsword or Toxic blowpipe.

This staff is a popular choice to use at the Inferno to conserve supplies. Combined with the Lightbearer and divine rune pouch, it is more inventory efficient to bring than the Saradomin godsword and Kodai wand to use as a main hand weapon. It is also sometimes used on the totems during the fight against The Nightmare due to the double damage inflicted, potentially restoring large amounts of prayer points.
