A player using Tumeken's shadow's built-in spell.

Tumeken's shadow is a two-handed powered staff requiring 85 Magic to wield, and is only available as a rare drop from the Tombs of Amascut. Powered by the sun itself, the staff was created by the god Tumeken during the Kharidian–Zarosian War as a means to fight back against the invading force of the Zarosian Empire. It was also used to create Tumeken's Warden and Elidinis' Warden, two massive automata imbued with the divine essence of himself and his wife Elidinis.

Passive effect

Tumeken's shadow has a passive effect exclusive to its built-in spell, in which the player's magic attack bonus and magic damage are multiplied by three from the player's worn equipment (four within the Tombs of Amascut); the magic damage increase from this is capped at a total of 100% Magic Strength. This effect also applies with negative bonuses, tripling the negative bonus.

The passive effect is extremely powerful with max mage gear, as it pushes the player's accuracy incredibly high, even when facing magic-resistant monsters such as General Graardor and Commander Zilyana. The staff's max hit also pushes higher with the maximum possible magic damage boost, even more than a sanguinesti staff and a fortified ward. It still hits lower than the twisted bow (when comparing both at max boosts), though it makes up for it for being more accurate in such cases.

The passive effect does not apply to Void Knight equipment and the Salve amulet(ei), though the slayer helmet(i) does, where its magic damage is multiplied after the passive effect. Lastly, in scenarios where Tumeken's shadow can be used against players (such as minigames), the multiplier does not apply for balancing reasons.

Maximum hit

The maximum hit dealt by the staff is dependent on the player's current visible Magic level; the formula is as follows. At level 0, the max hit is 1.

Note that any magic damage bonuses are applied after the base max hit is calculated.

Charging

In order to use the staff's magic spell, it must be charged with soul and chaos runes, holding up to 20,000 charges when fully charged. Each cast requires 2 soul runes and 5 chaos runes, costing 856 coins per cast.

Resource Cost per charge
2 x Soul rune 346
5 x Chaos rune 510
Total cost per charge 856

The total cost to fully charge the staff with 40,000 soul and 100,000 chaos runes is 17,120,000 coins. Assuming non-stop use, with one cast every 3 seconds equalling 1200 casts per hour, the shadow costs 1,027,200 coins per hour to use.

Players can uncharge the staff whenever and wherever they choose, getting all of their runes back.

Trivia

  • Tumeken's shadow was proposed as a replacement for the Tumeken's heka as the "standout reward" for the raid in a newspost on 13 May 2022, due to player feedback on the desire for a magic weapon that would "redefine Magic as a combat style just as the Scythe [of Vitur] and Twisted Bow did." It was then polled in the Tombs of Amascut Reward Changes poll with the caveat that the heka would be replaced with Tumeken's shadow if it passed the poll; this came to pass with 90.9% support.
  • ”Tumeken’s shadow” is also the name of a quest NPC fought in the Runescape quest titled “Where’s My Mummy.”
