Ancient essence is a drop received from defeating the Phantom Muspah. It can also be obtained by mining ancient essence crystals in the Ghorrock Dungeon with 75 Mining, granting 13.5 Mining experience. It is used to create the saturated heart and forgotten brews. It is also used to charge the Venator bow to use its passive effect.

Ancient essence can also be obtained by breaking down ancient icons and venator shards. Ancient icons give 5,000 essence, while venator shards give 50,000 essence.

A total of 150,000 Ancient essence is required to saturate the Imbued heart into a Saturated heart.

When mining the essence, it can be found in one of 3 spots in the wall just south of the entrance to the Phantom Muspah fight. Only one spot will be active, switching between spots randomly with possibly 60 to 90 seconds between each movement, similar to daeyalt essence rocks. Gems can also be obtained while mining, as is the case with most mines.

Mining enhancers have no effect on crystals, however, the Crystal pickaxe's effect does, therefore mining crystals with a charged crystal pickaxe will consume charges.

The currently known rates are as follows:

• At 75-77 Mining, 1-2 essence per ore mined
• At 78-89 Mining, 2-3 essence per ore mined
• At 90-99 Mining, 3-4 essence per ore mined

Players can expect roughly 1200-2500 essence per hour depending on mining level and type of pickaxe used. Invisible boosts such as Celestial ring will not increase the minimum amount of essence mined.

Trivia

• When pitched in the poll blog, the item's name was "Phantom essence". This was because the name of the quest and its rewards were polled by the development team as a "Mysterious Quest", where they wished to keep the Zarosian nature of the rewards a secret.
  • The true name of the quest and its rewards from the boss were then revealed in the Winter Summit 2022 a month later.
