History
Some time after the Betrayal of Zaros, the other gods appeared and banished Zamorak, who possessed the Stone of Jas, from Gielinor.[1] During this time, possession of the Stone went to Saradomin, who then hid it beneath the waves somewhere south of Hallowvale. Aliya and Zachariah, Justiciars of the Lion and Owl, were tasked with protecting the artefact;[2] Aliya was tasked to build the temple to house the artefact,[3] known to them as "The Eye", while Zachariah was to hunt down and slay those who would try to claim it, including Porazdir, one of Zamorak's generals.[4]
Sometime during the God Wars, many sought to claim the Stone, including servants of Zaros.[5] A group of Zarosians led by Perseriya managed to locate the Stone and attempted to use abyssal magic to steal it; however, because of the presence of the Stone (and not known to anyone) the spell was warped and instead opened a rift to The Scar,[6] the most dangerous part of the Abyss.[7] Nearly the entire Zarosian fleet and some of the Saradominists were sucked into the Scar, while creatures from it began pouring out of the rift, resulting in a huge battle. Aliya used the Stone to seal the abyssal rift,[8] and created The Great Guardian and many other rune guardians to protect the temple in the event the rift was reopened.[9] She then moved the Stone to an unknown location, and tasked her knights to clear out the rubble.[10]
During the Fifth Age, the Order of Wizards rediscovered the Temple in an attempt to find an ancient teleportation matrix to the runic altars. However, Mia Persten, the leading researcher in teleportation magic, accidentally reopened the rift and disappeared into the Abyss, activating the Temple's defences once more. The Great Guardian, with the assistance of several apprentices and a certain adventurer, manage to close the rift, albeit temporarily, due to the Stone no longer being present in the Temple.[11] However, it is later revealed that Persten was actually Sliske in disguise, who had opened the rift to test the adventurer's worthiness of being one of his wights.
Inaccessible altars
Three runic altars cannot be accessed via the Temple due to their locations not being known to the Saradominists who built its defences. The Astral Altar was a creation of the Moon Clan and generally unknown outside of it at the time. The true Soul Altar, buried deep beneath Menaphos, was likewise inaccessible. The Wrath Altar was not accessible until the Runecrafting Crusades.[12]
Trivia
- On the ocean floor to the east of the Temple, a pineapple, moai, and rock can be seen. This is a reference to the homes of the main characters of the television show SpongeBob SquarePants. This is further evidenced by their examine information.
- Attempting to light a fire within the temple grounds yields a message "A strange magical force won't let you light a fire here."
