A group of players fighting Scurrius, the Rat King.

Within the Varrock Sewers, players can fight Scurrius, the Rat King. Players can make their way east from the sewer entrance just east of the Varrock Palace courtyard, then climbing through the broken bars. Players can right-click the bars to choose whether to enter the public area or create an instance, which is free.

The public area contains a much stronger Scurrius (having 1,000 more health and slightly higher combat stats), though it has a more generous experience multiplier. The private version of Scurrius is faster to kill, but is weaker and gives a lower multiplier.

The use of a Dwarf multicannon is prohibited in the arena. Attempting to place a cannon gives the message: "It's far too damp for you to set up a cannon here."

If the player dies while fighting Scurrius, their grave will appear next to Historian Aldo just outside Scurrius' lair.

Fight overview

Scurrius uses several different attack styles during the fight:

  • Tail Swipe - A melee attack where Scurrius strikes the player with his tail, dealing up to 13 damage; Protect from Melee negates all damage. Only being used during the first two phases, this is his fastest and most accurate attack, and no warning is given for it.
  • Bolts of Electricity - A magic attack where Scurrius discharges lightning at the player, dealing up to 14 damage (8 in solo mode); Protect from Magic negates all damage. The attack will only deal damage on impact.
  • Flying Fur - A ranged attack where Scurrius throws a stinky fur ball at the player, dealing up to 13 damage (7 in solo mode); Protect from Missiles negates all damage. The attack will only deal damage on impact.

Special attacks

  • Healing - Upon reaching 80% of his health, Scurrius will occasionally move to a Food Pile, eating and restoring 5 or 10 health every few seconds. During this time, he will only use magic and ranged attacks, along with the Falling Bricks attack. This will stop upon reaching 30% of his health.
  • Minions - Scurrius will screech, causing six level 46 giant rats to appear around the arena. The rats are very accurate and hit 0-1 through Protect from Melee, but players will always instantly kill them upon attacking them, Protect from Melee is recommended as the rats can hit up to 4 without it. Hitting the rats with any of the rat bone weapons will incur no attack delay. The rats will persist even after Scurrius is slain, and can prevent players from healing with the Food Piles.
  • Falling Bricks - Scurrius will jump on the spot, causing rubble to fall down on the arena. One piece will always target the player's current tile when it was used, while others will fall randomly around the arena. This is indicated with a looming shadow on the targeted tile. Getting hit by the attack will deal 15-24 damage (15-22 in solo mode).

Phase one

At the start of the fight, Scurrius will be in the east side of the chamber and attack with melee by sweeping his tail, and occasionally use his Falling Bricks attack.

Upon reaching 80% of his health, Scurrius will move towards one of the Food Piles. He will break free of any binds in the process. The food pile selected is random, though usually one close to him. He may either walk or run towards the pile.

Phase two

File:Scurrius - ranged and magic attacks.mp4 At the food piles, Scurrius will eat every few seconds, healing 5 or 10 hitpoints per player in the arena. While the animation will show him eating ten times, he will only heal five times. After the tenth eating animation, he will stop and resume attacking players with melee. Scurrius can continue to use his Falling Bricks attack, attack with magic or range, and summon giant rats.

The healing that occurs during this phase is affected by the smoke ancient sceptre if Scurrius is poisoned (in that case he will heal for only 4 or 8 hitpoints per player).

Phase three

After reaching 30% of his health Scurrius will move to the centre of the arena, attacking the player exclusively with ranged and magic attacks at a faster rate than the first two phases. He can also use the Falling Bricks attack and summon minions during this phase. Notably, he can use the Falling Bricks attack multiple times in a row during this phase, so players should pay attention to the shadows on the ground and move as necessary to avoid heavy damage. If Scurrius heals above 30% of his health, he will reset back to phase 2 and will attempt to heal again. This will continue until Scurrius is dead.

Strategies

Until Scurrius reaches 30% of his health, the player should use Protect from Melee, as it is Scurrius' fastest and most accurate attack, due to his Attack level of 300 and +150 melee attack bonus. The ranged and magic attacks are generally less accurate (as he is level 50/100 in those stats), and can be blocked with late reactions. Avoid falling rubble as necessary. If the player is using mage or range attack styles and do not wish to pray flick, they may pray against whatever their equipment is weaker to when Scurrius is at the food piles as he will not perform melee attacks during this period.

When the giant rats appear:

  • If the player possesses a rat bone weapon, it is recommended to attack the giant rats using the no attack delay if you are trying to get the best experience per hour.
  • If the player does not possess a rat bone weapon, viable alternatives include a charged Venator bow or the special attack of the Rune thrownaxe or Dinh's bulwark.
  • Otherwise, try to trap them using Scurrius and themselves to minimize the amount of rats appearing, as they are rather accurate and bypass prayer.

Once Scurrius reaches 30% of his health (150 for solo/450 for group), he will head to the centre of the arena and continually drop rubble. He will no longer use melee attacks, instead throwing ranged and magic attacks until slain. Scurrius will also continue to summon waves of rat minions. He will do this up to 12 times, after which there will be no more additional rat waves.

After Scurrius dies, kill off the other rats. If the player is using a rat bone weapon, they will be able to attack the giant rats with no delay. Attacking Scurrius and then swapping to a minion will still incur normal attack delay.

You can eat from the Food Pile once every 10 minutes to heal to full outside of combat. This cannot be done for a couple of seconds after being attacked, but you can eat while Scurrius or the rats are still alive.
