Bryophyta's staff is a staff requiring level 30 Attack and Magic to wield. It is created by using a battlestaff with Bryophyta's essence, which requires level 62 Crafting. Its stats are almost identical to the Ancient staff but without the -1 Prayer bonus and attacks one tick slower. It is also a possible requirement for a master clue scroll emote clue.

The staff can be charged with up to 1,000 nature runes. While the staff is equipped, it acts as if the player is holding the charged number of nature runes. In addition, while equipped and charged it has a 1/15 chance to not consume a charge.

The staff can be used along with a tome of fire to increase profits with High Level Alchemy; however, it takes a very long time for the extra profit to pay for the trade value of the staff and tome.

The staff is untradeable while it has any charges. Players can use a right-click option to remove all of the staff's charges, but the nature runes stored within it are not returned. In addition, if the player dies with the staff while it has charges, all charges except one will be lost. Ultimate ironmen do not keep additional charges on death.

It has the highest Magic Attack and Magic Defence bonuses of any item obtainable in free-to-play, +5 more Magic Attack and Defence than any of the elemental staves along with significantly better offensive melee bonuses, comparable to a rune longsword. Bryophyta's staff is available to F2P players by bringing Bryophyta's essence to Zaff in central Varrock, along with a fee of 50,000 coins.

Passive effect

While equipped and charged, the staff has a 1/15 chance of not consuming a charge when any spell that uses a nature rune is cast. If a spell costs multiple nature runes to cast, only one rune is saved by the staff in case of a successful activation.[1] When a charge is saved, it can be saved again at the same chance. The average number of charges per nature rune (if casting a spell that costs one nature rune per cast) can be represented as a geometric series , which converges to (15/14)x ≈ 1.071x charges per x nature runes. Thus the effective number of nature runes for a fully charged staff is 1,071.43 on average, with a 95% chance of lying between 1,055 and 1,089.

At current market prices, this saves an average of 7.64 coins per rune consumed, meaning approximately 1,550,910 casts are required before the staff will pay for itself, without considering the opportunity cost of saving other coins by using an elemental staff. However, considering the elemental runes used may result in a loss. For example, casting high alchemy with a Bryophyta's staff instead of a fire staff results in an average cost change of −17.36 coins per cast (though the use of a Tome of fire at the same time would negate this). When selling back the staff, assuming only the 1% GE tax is used as cost with the Tome of fire, approximately 15,510 casts are required before one would start turning a profit from using the staff. When using High Level Alchemy at max efficiency (1200 cast per hour), one would expect a profit after approximately 13 hours of alching.

Bryophyta's staff is a now a free-to-play item, and can now be made there by bringing Bryophyta's essence and 50,000 coins to Zaff.

Trivia

  • While 1,550,910 casts would be required for the staff to pay for itself, a player can go from 55-99 magic with only 197,967 casts of High Level Alchemy. Despite this, a player may still find the staff to be profitable if they are able to sell it for a good price once they are finished using it.
  • It is the equivalent of the nature staff from RuneScape 3, released 8 years prior.
