The ancient sceptre is an upgraded version of the ancient staff that requires level 70 Magic, 60 Strength, and 50 Attack to wield. It is made by bringing the ancient icon and staff to Eblis. This combination process is irreversible. As the icon is an untradeable drop from the Phantom Muspah, the sceptre requires completion of Secrets of the North to create.

The ancient sceptre, like its predecessor, can be used to autocast spells from the Ancient Magicks and standard spellbook. In addition, the sceptre possesses a passive effect that increases the effects of Ancient Magicks by 10%. This passive effect does not increase the magic damage bonus. The visible 5% magic damage bonus stacks with slayer helmet bonus.

As a Zarosian item, it will also grant god protection towards Zarosian NPCs in the God Wars Dungeon.

If players die with it in the Wilderness, the ancient staff is dropped for the killer, and the ancient icon disappears.

Passive effect

The ancient sceptre has a passive effect which increases the effects of all Ancient Magicks by 10%:

Spell Buffed effect
Poison severity is increased to 11, up from 10.

(Poison caused by these spells starts with 1 hit of 3 damage, instead of starting at 2 damage.)

Poison severity is increased to 22, up from 20.

(Poison caused by these spells starts with 2 hits of 5 damage, instead of starting at 4 damage.)

Opponent's Attack level is reduced by 11% instead of 10%.
Opponent's Attack level is reduced by 16.5% instead of 15%.
Successful hits heal the caster by 27.5% of the damage dealt instead of 25%.[a]
Ice Rush receives no buff from using the sceptre.[b]
Opponent is frozen for 17 ticks (10.2 seconds) instead of 16 ticks (9.6 seconds).
Opponent is frozen for 26 ticks (15.6 seconds) instead of 24 ticks (14.4 seconds).
Opponent is frozen for 35 ticks (21 seconds) instead of 32 ticks (19.2 seconds).
  1. ^ This only applies to singular hits that heal at least 10 Hitpoints; multiple hits that add up to at least 10 Hitpoints healed do not benefit from the passive effect. Additionally, this stacks multiplicatively with bloodbark armour; when worn alongside the ancient sceptre, successful hits heal the caster by 38.5% of the damage dealt.
  2. ^ A 10% increase to Ice Rush's freeze duration is 8.8 ticks. As most calculations almost always round down due to the game's engine, this effectively results in no buffs for Ice Rush.

Trivia

  • When pitched in the poll blog, the item's name was "Soulblight sceptre". This was because the name of the quest and its rewards were polled by the development team as a "Mysterious Quest", where they wished to keep the Zarosian nature of the rewards a secret.
    • The true name of the quest and its rewards from the boss were then revealed in the Winter Summit 2022 a month later.
  • It is currently one of six items with a negative prayer bonus. The other items being the upgrades to the sceptre, and the base item the sceptre is made of: the ancient staff.
