UIM Guide

Herblore is one of the most challenging skills for ultimate ironman players. It is a very inventory-stressful skill to train as it requires a number of herbs, secondary ingredients, and potions in the inventory throughout the training process. Herblore is a very worthwhile skill to train however, as high-level potions are very useful in combat. In non-combat situations, players can also benefit from having stamina potions for restoring run energy.

Early training: Quests

Early levels are best trained through quest experience rewards and experience lamps. Recommended quests are listed in the table below. Completing them would get the player up to around level 50 Herblore, assuming the player makes some potions along the way and uses Achievement Diary lamps on Herblore. Druidic Ritual is not listed as a requirement for the quests, as it is a prerequisite for most quests below and using any experience lamps or books on Herblore.

Collecting herbs and herb seeds

Common sources of herbs and herb seeds are listed below.

Wintertodt

Training Firemaking at the Wintertodt will give herbs and herb seeds. The quality of these scale depending on the Herblore and Farming levels, respectively. While players do not get that many herbs and herb seeds, subduing the Wintertodt can be a good way to get some early Herblore levels while training other skills at the Wintertodt.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Firemaking.

Pickpocketing Master Farmers

At high Thieving levels, Master Farmers are a good option for dedicated herb seed collection. They also yield a lot of ranarr seeds, which can be made into prayer potions for Slayer training. For 100% pickpocket success rate, players will need to have level 94 Thieving and have completed the hard tasks in the Ardougne Diary. If the diary has not been completed, the Thieving cape must be worn for the 100% success rate. Having the seed box is strongly recommended for more space for the seeds.

At maximum efficiency, pickpocketing Master Farmers can provide up to 70,000 Herblore experience worth of seeds per hour.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Thieving.

Farming contracts

Doing farming contracts in the Farming Guild is the most effective way to get herb seeds over time. This method requires a lot of inventory space for all the different kinds of seeds used in the contracts, so it is recommended to pair training in this method with other skills that do not require much inventory space.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Farming.

Slayer

Many Slayer monsters, such as nechryael, dagannoth, and aberrant spectres drop herbs and herb seeds commonly. While these monsters can be killed off task, it is much more efficient overall to kill them on task because of the Slayer experience. Having the herb sack for Slayer training can be useful to store the grimy herbs, although the majority of the Herblore experience is gained through seeds.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Slayer.

Combat

Herblore experience can be gained from other combat outside of Slayer. Both raids are notable sources of grimy herbs, which can be a nice source of bonus Herblore experience while raiding. The Chambers of Xeric gives a lot more herbs and also has a chance of rewarding a dark relic, which can be used for Herblore experience. The Theatre of Blood gives less herbs, but offers some potato cacti and wines of zamorak in return.

Zulrah drops high-level herbs and herb seeds fairly often. Additionally, Zulrah drops antidote++'s commonly, which can be made into anti-venoms.

Herbiboar

Tracking the herbiboar can be a decent source of herbs for some players. Player will need to have stamina potions to restore run energy, and the herb sack for storing large amounts of herbs before noting them at the Tool Leprechaun. Having a high Herblore level is also recommended, as the herbs obtained scale depending on the player's Herblore level, ranging from low-level guams all the way up to torstols.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Hunter.

General information and tips

Farming herbs

Doing herb runs is one of the primary ways to get herbs. It is also the only reliable way to get large amounts of a specific herb, which can be useful if the player needs a specific type of potion for combat or other training. Herb runs can be done with any activity that does not require a full inventory, although it is recommended to have a decent amount of space for the herbs for better efficiency.

Herbs take 80 minutes to grow. It is recommended to do herb runs fairly consistently whenever possible, as going through a lot of herb seeds takes a lot of real time. Herb runs can be started at low Farming and Herblore levels, and improve in speed and efficiency over time.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Farming.

Cleaning and noting herbs

Both grimy and clean herbs can be noted at any Tool Leprechaun for later use. While gathering herbs, it is generally best to clean the herbs before noting them so players would not have to spend extra time unnoting and cleaning them later. In some cases it may be better not to clean the herbs however, as raids and some bosses give a lot of noted grimy herbs, and it would be inconvenient to clean them in between every raid or trip with limited inventory space.

Players can clean noted grimy herbs in bulk by unnoting the grimy herbs at a bank, cleaning them and noting the clean herbs at a Tool Leprechaun. The best place to do this is in the north wing of the Farming Guild, which requires level 85 Farming to access. Players who do not have the required Farming level can do this in the Hosidius Vinery, which does not have any requirements.

Zahur can clean herbs for 200 coins per herb, but it is better to clean the herbs yourself as this offers decent Herblore experience.

Making unfinished potions

Unfinished potions are made by combining a clean herb with a vial of water. Water-filled vial packs can be bought from various shops, and they can be opened for 100 noted vials of water each.

After completion of the hard Desert Diary, Zahur can make unfinished potions at the cost of 200 coins per herb. Players can take noted clean herbs and vials of water, and she will give noted unfinished potions in return. Having her make the unfinished potions saves a lot of time and effort, and players should therefore complete the hard Desert Diary before doing any significant amount of Herblore training. While this service costs some money, the saved time is well worth the extra cost.

Making potions at the Grand Exchange

A player making super attacks and noting them at Bob Barter.

Any potions the player wants to keep for later use should be made and/or decanted at the Grand Exchange. Bob Barter can be used to decant potions into specific doses, which also lets Ultimate Ironman players turn potions into their noted form.

Players need to have coins or a stack of noted empty vials in their inventory when noting potions. Decanting from larger doses into smaller doses costs a small amount of money, as the decanter charges players if they did not have enough vials while decanting into smaller doses.

Generally it is best to decant potions into 2-dose potions, as this only requires 1 empty inventory slot (or an empty vial). This saves some time compared to decanting into 1-dose potions. If the player can make an even number of potions per inventory (such as 10), they can keep an unnoted 1-dose potion in their inventory. This makes it so the player does not have to drop anything when decanting potions into 2-dose potions.

When using noted unfinished potions and noted secondary ingredients, it is recommended to be able to make 12 potions per inventory for the best efficiency. However, if the player is going to make different types of potions in a session and only has a relatively small amount of potions to make, it is usually better not to store items at an Item Retrieval Service again but rather make potions with less inventory space available to save time.

With an optimal inventory setup, making potions from noted unfinished potions and noted secondary ingredients would go as follows:

  1. Combine 12 unfinished potions and 12 secondary ingredients into potions.
  2. Unnote 12 secondary ingredients, and drop one of them on the ground.
  3. Run 4 tiles south-west, and decant the unnoted potions into 2-dose potions to note them.
  4. Pick up the secondary ingredient on the ground.
  5. Unnote 12 unfinished potions, and repeat the process.

Making disposable potions with noted ingredients

Potions that the player does not wish to keep should be made in the Piscatoris Fishing Colony. Arnold Lydspor acts both as a bank and a general store, so players are able to unnote the ingredients at him and sell the finished potions to his general store. He can be kept in place by talking to him, and as long as players do not move away or he does not get interrupted by other players, he will stand in place without despawning.

Should the player not have access to the Piscatoris Fishing Colony, players can make the potions at any bank and simply drop the potions. This is slightly slower and more click-intensive than using Arnold Lydspor, however.

Alternatively, players wishing to recoup some coins, can make their potions at a bank near to a general store. Some good options are the Rogues' Den where you can bank at Emerald Benedict and sell to Martin Thwait (requiring 50 Agility and 50 Thieving) or Catherby bank which is only 11 tiles away from a general store.

Boosting Herblore level using Botanical pies

File:Super attack(4).pngFile:Super attack(4).pngFile:Super defence(4).pngFile:Super defence(4).png

Players can use botanical pies to boost Herblore to make potions 4 levels above their level. A good method for utilizing botanical pies while maximizing inventory space for making potions is to make as many pies as possible at the Lumbridge range and RFD chest, while still being able to death bank at Hespori. Players can then use the Grand Exchange spirit tree to the Farming Guild spirit tree to withdraw a small number of pies at a time, and returning vice versa. Players cannot choose how many to withdraw directly, but can limit their inventory space so only the desired amount are withdrawn.

Making potions

When making potions of any kind, players should store their items at an Item Retrieval Service for more inventory space.

Level 3+: Attack potions

At level 3, players can make attack potions by using guam leaves with eyes of newt. Attack potions are useful for gaining early Herblore levels as their secondary ingredient can be quickly bought at a number of Herblore shops. The potions themselves are not particularly useful for combat as they bring fairly little benefit even at lower levels, so most players consider them as disposable.

Level 15+: Serum 207

At level 15, players can make serum 207's by using tarromins with ashes. To be able to make the serum 207's, players must have read the Diary of Herbi Flax, which can be found in Mort'ton. These potions are not useful, but the low requirements and ease of secondary ingredient collection makes this a good way to train at low Herblore levels. The easiest way to obtain ashes is to pick them up after fires burn out.

Level 26+: Energy potions

At level 26, players can make energy potions by using harralanders with chocolate dust. While combat potions give slightly more experience per herb, the ease of secondary collection makes energy potions better to make for Herblore experience. Although energy potions are considered disposable even at lower levels, players wishing to keep them should create them at Nardah where you can unnote supplies, buy chocolate bars, and note potions using Zahur.

The best way to obtain chocolate dust is to buy chocolate bars from the Culinaromancer's Chest and using a knife or a pestle and mortar on the bars to grind them into dust. The chest also serves as a bank for unnoting the rest of the supplies to make the potion, which makes it the best option to buy chocolate bars from. Having completed at least 6 subquests of Recipe for Disaster is recommended for sufficient stock. If the player has not completed Recipe for Disaster, chocolate bars can also be bought in bulk from Rok's Chocs Box in Nardah or Hudo at the Grand Tree.

Level 38+: Prayer potions

At level 38, players can make prayer potions by using ranarr weeds with snape grass. Prayer potions are very useful for Slayer training, and any other scenario where Prayer is useful.

The best way to collect snape grass in large quantities is through Farming. Snape grass can be grown in allotment patches at level 61 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at a Tool Leprechaun for later use. Players can quickly get a lot of snape grass even from one full run, as three snape grass seeds planted in a single allotment often yield 20 or more snape grass in a harvest. Snape grass seeds can be obtained from farming contracts, Wintertodt, Giant Mole seed nests, Master Farmers, and various Slayer monsters.

Snape grass can also be collected on Waterbirth Island, which is easily accessed via the Waterbirth Island portal in the player-owned house. This is only recommended for players who need to make relatively few potions and do not have any snape grass seeds on hand, as farming snape grass is a lot faster and easier. At lower levels, snape grass can also be collected at the peninsula near the Crafting Guild.

Level 45+: Super attacks

At level 45, players can make super attacks by using irit leafs with eyes of newt. Super attacks are useful in combat, and they are required to make super combat potions at high Herblore levels.

Eyes of newt can be bought in packs of 100 at a number of Herblore shops. This easy access to a noted secondary makes super attacks a staple Herblore training method even at high Herblore levels.

Level 50+: Fishing potions

At level 50, players can make fishing potions by using avantoes with snape grass. Fishing potions are not useful, so they are considered disposable. Making them is only recommended for players who have excess snape grass and do not plan to make stamina potions.

The best way to collect snape grass in large quantities is through Farming. Snape grass can be grown in allotment patches at level 61 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at a Tool Leprechaun for later use.

Level 52+: Super energies

At level 52, players can make super energies by using avantoes with mort myre fungi. Super energies can be used for a number of training methods that use run energy, as well as for quests which require a lot of travel. However, super energies can be later made into stamina potions which are much more effective, so it is recommended to save some super energies until then.

The best way to collect mort myre fungi is to cast Bloom on dead logs inside of Mort Myre Swamp near fairy ring BKR. To be able to cast Bloom with a blessed silver sickle, players must have completed the Nature Spirit quest.

The sulliuscep mushrooms sometimes drop mort myre fungus when chopped, but this method is not recommended as it is much slower and inconvenient for strictly getting mort myre fungi.

Level 55+: Super strengths

At level 55, players can make super strengths by using kwuarms with limpwurt roots. Super strengths are very useful in Melee combat and they are required to make super combat potions at high Herblore levels.

The best way to collect limpwurt roots in large quantities is through Farming. Limpwurts can be grown in flower patches at level 26 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at any Tool Leprechaun for later use. Because there are few uses for the other flowers, many players opt to use this patch almost exclusively for farming limpwurt roots. Limpwurts only take 20 minutes to grow, so they can obtained relatively fast in large quantities if needed.

Limpwurt seeds can be obtained by pickpocketing master farmers, or exchanging mole parts to Wyson the gardener and opening the seed nests. The seeds are also dropped by nechryael and kurasks, although in low quantities. Limpwurt roots are also dropped in small amounts from Wilderness bosses and General Graardor's bodyguards.

Level 63+: Super restores

At level 63, players can make super restores by using snapdragon with red spiders' eggs. Super restores are very useful for Slayer training and high-level combat. They are often paired with Saradomin brews to mitigate their stat-lowering effect.

The best way to collect red spiders' eggs in large quantities is to kill spidines in Creature Creation. Players need to have completed the Tower of Life quest and the medium tasks in the Ardougne Diary for this method. Spidines drop 3–6 noted red spiders' eggs with every kill, and creating one requires 1 red spiders' eggs and 1 raw sardine. For the initial red spiders' eggs, players can collect them off the ground in the Edgeville Dungeon or the Varrock Sewers. Raw sardines can be bought from the fish monger in Rellekka, or Gerrant in Port Sarim. It is suggested to have a Waterbirth Island portal in your POH, the Elite Fremennik Diary or Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Diary completed to quickly purchase sardines.

Other sources for noted red spiders' eggs include Sarachnis, Venenatis, and Temple Spiders.

Level 66+: Super defences

At level 66, players can make super defences by using cadantines with white berries. Super defences are mainly used to make super combat potions at high Herblore levels. Otherwise, they bring very little benefit to combat situations and therefore most players consider them as disposable. They still offer relatively high experience per potion and their secondary ingredient is fast to get, which makes them one of the best potions to make for Herblore experience.

The best way to collect white berries is through Farming. White berries can be grown in bush patches at level 59 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at any Tool Leprechaun for later use. Berries will grow back over time, so players can opt to keep a white berry bush planted at one or more patches for easy access to the secondary ingredient.

Noted white berries are also dropped by kurasks and Undead Druids. With partial completion of Regicide, some white berries spawns can be found in Isafdar, where they can be collected off the ground. Farming white berries is a lot easier and faster than obtaining them through other means, however.

Level 69+: Antifire potions

At level 69, players can make antifire potions by using lantadymes with dragon scale dust. Antifire potions are mainly used when fighting dragons extensively, such as when training Prayer or killing Vorkath. They can later be made into super antifire potions, which can be useful for killing Vorkath. Players should only make whatever amount of antifire potions they need, as magic potions are much better to make for Herblore experience.

The best way to collect dragon scale dust is to pick up blue dragon scales in Corsair Cove Dungeon under Myths' Guild and use a pestle and mortar to grind the scales into dust. Players who have not completed Dragon Slayer II can collect blue dragon scales in Taverley Dungeon instead, which is slightly slower.

Level 72+: Ranging potions

At level 72, players can make ranging potions by using dwarf weeds with wines of Zamorak. Ranging potions are useful for any Ranged combat, such as chinning, bossing, and raids.

The best way to collect wines of zamorak in large quantities is to telegrab them in the Deep Wilderness Dungeon. Players will need to have completed the hard tasks in the Wilderness Diary for the wines to be obtained in noted form. Players will also need to deathpile their items to keep them safe from potential player killers. Wearing some easily obtainable defensive equipment (such as black dragonhide armour) and bringing supplies (such as Saradomin brews along with super restores) for tanking player killers is also recommended, as the area is in single-way combat and this method does not take up much inventory space otherwise. When uninterrupted and using high population worlds, players can telegrab up to around 500–550 wines of Zamorak per hour, including the time deathpiling the items.

Alternatively, players can telegrab wines of zamorak in the Chaos Temple near Burthorpe, but this is a lot slower than telegrabbing them in the Wilderness.

Noted wines of zamorak can also be obtained elsewhere, such as from the Kalphite Queen, Theatre of Blood, Cerberus, K'ril Tsutsaroth's bodyguards in the God Wars Dungeon, Undead Druids, and Greater Nechryael (in small amounts).

Should the player have excess Tithe Farm points, Bologa's blessings can be used to make Zamorak's grapes in the Vinery, which can in turn be fermented into wines of zamorak. This method is slower compared to other ones, however, does not require telegrabbing, combat stats, and grants decent farming experience.

In order to do a full harvest of the Vinery, 24 tithe farm points are required for the grape seeds. With a harvest range of 60-120 grapes, 3-6 points are required for the Bologa's blessings. Assuming an average yield of 90 grapes, 28.5 total tithe farm points are required. Considering the success rate for turning Zamorak's grapes into wine of Zamorak is 50%-100%; the amount of wines per full harvest can range from an average of 45 at level 65 cooking, and 90 at level 98 cooking. Therefore, players could roughly expect a ratio of 1.6 wines of Zamorak per tithe farm point at 65 cooking, and 3.1 at 99 cooking. At 107 tithe points per hour and 98 cooking, this equates to 331 wines per hour. Players also gain an average of 11,478 farming experience for a full harvest.

The process for making ranging potions through this method is identical to making jugs of wine from noted grapes for cooking training, but using 2 extra inventory space to hold the unfinished dwarf weed potions, and the decanted ranging potions.

Level 76+: Magic potions

At level 76, players can make magic potions by using lantadymes with potato cacti. Magic potions bring very little benefit to combat situations, so most players consider them as disposable. They still offer high experience per potion and the secondary ingredient is relatively fast to get, which makes them one of the best potions to make for Herblore experience.

The best way to collect potato cacti is through Farming. Potato cacti can be grown in cactus patches at level 64 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at any Tool Leprechaun for later use. Keeping a potato cactus planted at one or both of these locations can be useful, as the potato cacti will regrow over time. However, as there are only 2 cactus patches available (one in Al Kharid and one in the Farming Guild), collecting a mass amount of potato cactus can take a while in real time.

Other sources for potato cacti include the Kalphite Queen, Theatre of Blood, and Undead Druids.

Level 77+: Stamina potions

At level 77, players can make stamina potions by using super energies with amylase crystals. Stamina potions are highly desirable for their energy restoration and stamina effect, which lowers the speed at which run energy drains.

Amylase crystals can be obtained through trading in 10 marks of grace for a pack of 100 crystals. Each amylase crystal will convert a single dose of a super energy potion, requiring four crystals for a 4-dose stamina potion. Amylase crystals stack in the inventory, making them very easy to use in converting super energy potions into stamina potions. It is best to make stamina potions along with super energies to save some time noting the potions instead of making the super energies and noting them beforehand, however.

Level 78+: Zamorak brews

At level 78, players can make Zamorak brews by using torstols with jangerberries. Making Zamorak brews is generally not recommended, as torstols are relatively scarce and super combat potions are much better to use for any Melee combat. However, Zamorak brews give more experience per herb than and they are a lot faster to make, which can be useful for some players.

The best way to collect jangerberries is through Farming. Jangerberries can be grown in bush patches at level 48 Farming, and as a farming produce they can be noted at any Tool Leprechaun for later use. However, this can be inconvenient as players may want to dedicate the bush patches for white berries instead for making super defences.

Alternatively, players can pick jangerberries up off the island west of Yanille. The POH portal in Yanille provides an easy teleport to the area, with options to either note them at a Tool Leprechaun or simply make the Zamorak brews on the spot.

Level 81+: Saradomin brews

At level 81, players can make Saradomin brews by using toadflax with crushed nests. Saradomin brews are useful for raids and high-level bossing, and they can also be used as a high-healing food source for other situations, such as in the Wilderness and Volcanic Mine.

To make brews, the crushed nests and empty nests were traditionally difficult to manage as they were not notable, but since the introduction of hunters' rumours they can be easily obtained in noted form.

The best way to obtain empty nests is to do hunters rumours (at least adept level tasks requiring 57 hunter). With proper hunter blocklist players can get more than 20 noted nests per hour as well other herbs in noted form.

Alternatively players can collect bird nests through bird house trapping on Fossil Island. While this is not a particularly fast method of collecting bird nests in real time, it is the fastest method of collecting them over time effectively (only counting the time doing a bird house run). Additionally, bird house trapping is a fairly efficient Hunter training method and it also offers seeds for Farming training. When using magic logs, players can expect to get around 9 bird nests per run on average.

You can also use the Forestry Kit with log basket and brace attached to store 28 logs of your choosing in the magic wardrobe which makes swapping into birdhouse runs very easy.

For more information, see Ultimate Ironman Guide/Hunter.

Another option is to kill the Giant Mole for bird nests. Its mole claw and mole skin drops are noted after completing the hard tasks in the Falador Diary, and they can be later exchanged with Wyson the gardener for bird nests. The Giant Mole can be killed with Ranged using twisted bow or the bow of faerdhinen, or with Melee using Dharok the Wretched's equipment, ghrazi rapier, or zamorakian hasta. Players can also combine bird house runs while killing the boss for extra bird nests.

Level 90+: Super combat potions

An efficient method of making Super combat potions on Ultimate Ironman

At level 90, players can make super combat potions by combining super attacks, super strengths, and super defences with torstols or unfinished torstol potions. Super combat potions are the best one to use for any Melee combat. They require some effort and planning to make, however.

Level 92+: Super antifire potions

At level 92, players can make super antifire potions by using regular antifire potions with crushed superior dragon bones. Super antifire potions can be used for killing Vorkath, where their effect makes players take less damage from Vorkath's dragonbreath attacks. They should not be made for any other use, as regular antifire potions will suffice elsewhere and the player will miss out on the Prayer experience from the superior dragon bones.

Crushed superior dragon bones are made by using a pestle and mortar with superior dragon bones, which can only be obtained by killing Vorkath. As neither the bones nor their crushed version stack or can be easily noted, it is recommended to have noted antifire potions on hand to make converting them into super antifire potions easier.

Other potion making methods

More advanced potion making methods are listed in this section.

Making super energies and noting them

4803702K

This method goes as follows:

  1. Head to the Mort Myre Swamp using the fairy ring BKR, and go to a spot nearby that has multiple logs.
  2. Collect 11 mort myre fungi, and use them on the unfinished avantoe potions to make 11 super energies.
  3. Collect another 11 mort myre fungi.
  4. Teleport to the Grand Exchange and decant the potions in your inventory as 2-doses. With the 1-dose potion in your inventory you do not have to drop anything.
  5. Unequip an item to fill 1 inventory slot, and unnote 11 unfinished avantoe potions.
  6. Make 11 super energies, and unnote another 11 unfinished avantoe potions.
  7. Equip the item you unequipped before, and decant the potions as 2-doses. This way you will get the 1-dose potion back, and do not have to drop anything.
  8. Repeat the process. Restore Prayer points whenever needed.

  9. Decant the stamina potions into 2-doses to note them. This will note the 1-dose stamina potion you had previously.
  10. Repeat the process. Restore Prayer points whenever needed.

Making Saradomin brews from Giant Mole seed nests

The Giant Mole can be killed for its mole claw and skin drops, which can be exchanged to Wyson the gardener for nest boxes.

The exact method varies slightly depending on what seeds the player wishes to keep. The method below assumes making 8 potions per inventory and using a 1-dose Saradomin brew for faster decanting, which allows the player to keep all herb seeds and the most valuable tree seeds. This method goes as follows:

  1. Combine 8 unfinished toadflax potions and 8 crushed nests into Saradomin brews.
  2. Extract 8 seed nests from the nest box.
  3. Decant the potions into 2-dose potions to note them.
  4. Open the seed nests. Drop the seeds you do not intend to keep, and store seeds inside the seed box if needed.
  5. Crush the bird nests by using a pestle and mortar on them, and unnote 8 unfinished toadflax potions.
  6. Repeat the process.
