Maximum magic hit is the maximum damage a player can deal in a single magic attack. It is affected by player's Magic level, equipment and other special bonuses.

Maximum magic hit possible

In most cases, the Tumeken's shadow provides the highest maximum magic hit possible. The exceptions to this are the Volatile nightmare staff's special attack, the Accursed sceptre's special attack while in the wilderness, the Accursed sceptre's against Revenants in the wilderness while wearing an Amulet of avarice and having Forinthry Surge, and all burst or barrage spells when hitting up to nine targets.

Spellbook-Based

The following tables show the maximum magic hit possible for all magic attacks that are based on spellbook combat spells except for Magic dart. Since Magic dart's damage is based on the player's Magic level, it'll be shown under the section titled "Magic Level-Based".

  1. ^ With the exception of Flames of Zamorak, the staff of the dead can be substituted with any other +15% magic damage weapon, such as the staff of light, staff of balance, toxic staff of the dead, kodai wand, and any version of the nightmare staff.
  2. ^ The max hit for air, water, and earth spells increases to match the fire spell once your magic level is high enough to use it. A magic level of at least 13 is needed for Strike spells, 35 for Bolt, 59 for Blast, 75 for Wave, and 95 for Surge.
  3. ^ 3.0 3.1 3.2 The castle wars bracelet only needs to be worn when the game starts. Players should switch to the tormented bracelet after the match begins, as they will retain the castle wars bracelet's effect. Additionally, the cape and headwear slot are occupied by the castle wars cape and castle wars hood during games; these must remain on at all times. The castle wars bracelet's effect only applies when damaging an enemy player while they're carrying your team's flag.
  4. ^ 4.0 4.1 4.2 The Revenant Caves is located in level 17 to 40 Wilderness. Players become and remain skulled when equipping and wearing the Amulet of avarice; losing all items and inventory when killed. After unequipping the amulet, the skull remains and behaves like a normal PK skull; disappearing after twenty minutes. Gaining Forinthry Surge requires killing the Revenant maledictus as a top-damaging player. Afterwards, the Forinthry Surge status will last for 30 minutes. Without the +15% magic damage from Forinthry Surge, the player's damage is equivalent to wearing a Salve amulet(ei).
  5. ^ 5.0 5.1 The maximum elemental weakness is 50% for air, 100% for water, 100% for earth, and 200% for fire.
  6. ^ The maximum elemental weakness for undead monsters is 50% for air. There are no undead monsters with elemental weaknesses to the other three elements.
  7. ^ 7.0 7.1 The staff of the dead can be substituted with any other +15% magic damage weapon, such as the staff of light, staff of balance, toxic staff of the dead, kodai wand, and any version of the nightmare staff.
  8. ^ 8.0 8.1 8.2 8.3 8.4 8.5 8.6 8.7 The castle wars bracelet bonus only applies to the flag bearer. Since only one opponent can carry the flag at a time, this bonus only applies to one of the nine targets.

Calculating maximum magic hit

All Magic damage starts with a magic attack in the form of a spellbook combat spell, a charged powered staff, or one of the three magic special attacks. Once the magic attack's max hit is looked up, referred to as the "base max damage", it undergoes several mathematical operations before arriving at the applied damage seen in-game. Many factors affect magic damage including wearing magic damage equipment, monster type, status conditions, player location, and more. Note that this page does not cover attack and defence rolls but simply how the damage is calculated and applied. To simplify as much as possible, the operations have been broken down by floor operations. A floor operation is basically rounding down. Damage is only dealt using integers, not decimals. At times during this process, the game will round down its current damage value before continuing. The entire set of equations are listed below. The following sections will go over each line in more detail.

Base Max Damage

The player's magic level does not affect the max damage for spells except for Magic dart and standard spellbook's elemental spells (wind, water, and earth). The max damage for all powered staves and special attacks, however, does depend on the player's magic level. In both cases, a higher magic level will increase accuracy, making it more likely to successfully hit.

Shadow Bonus: This is the passive effect of the Tumeken's shadow. Multiply by 4 when equipped and inside TOA, 3 when equipped and outside of TOA, and 1 when not equipped.

Minimum: The "minimum" function uses the lesser value of Shadow Bonus or 1. This caps the passive effect of the Shadow Bonus at 1, or 100%.

Void: If equipped with the Elite Void Knight equipment set including the Void mage helm, add +5%.

Salve: If equipped with a Salve amulet(i) or Salve amulet(ei) and attacking an undead monster, add +15% or +20% respectively.

Avarice: If equipped with a Amulet of avarice and attacking a revenants monster, add +20%. If Forinthry Surge is active, add an additional +15% for a total of +35%.

Smoke Battlestaff: If equipped with a Smoke Battlestaff or Mystic smoke staff while casting a spell from the standard spellbook, add +10%.

Virtus Robes Ancient Bonus: If equipped with any piece of the Virtus robes while casting a spell from the Ancient Magicks, add +3% per piece (up to a total of +9%).

Prayer: If the prayer Mystic Lore, Mystic Might, or Augury is active, add +1%, +2%, or +4% respectively.

Pre Hit Roll

This is the pre-roll multiplicative phase. Each bonus is multiplied and then rounded down one at a time.

Slayer: If equipped with a Black mask (i) or a Slayer helmet (i) while attacking a monster that's part of a slayer task, and also while not wearing an Amulet of avarice or any variant of the Salve amulet (or at least not attacking a revenant/undead monster while wearing it), add +15%.

Sceptre Wilderness: If equipped with a charged Thammaron's sceptre or Accursed sceptre or their autocast modes, Thammaron's sceptre (a) or Accursed sceptre (a), and attacking within the wilderness, add +50%.

Accursed Sceptre Special Attack: If equipped with a charged Accursed sceptre or its autocast mode, Accursed sceptre (a), and using its special attack, add +50%. Note that when using the autocast sceptre, despite the spell being used for autocast in combat, the special attack will always use the scepre's built-in spell. This means the special attack in either mode will be calculated the same.

Tome of Fire: If equipped with a charged Tome of fire and casting a fire spell from the standard spellbook, add +10%. (In PvP, add +50% instead of 10%.)

Tome of Water: If equipped with a charged Tome of water and casting a water spell from the standard spellbook, add +10%. (In PvP, add +20% instead of 10%.)

Hit Roll

At this point, the game rolls to determine what the hit damage will be. This will be a random integer ranging from zero to the max hit calculated so far. If a zero is rolled, it will be changed to a 1.

Post Hit Roll

Before the damage from the hit roll is applied and seen in-game, it undergoes some additional post hit roll damage modifiers. Simular to the pre-hit roll, each of these are multiplicative meaning they're multiplied and then rounded down, one at a time.

Mark of Darkness: If Mark of Darkness has been cast by the player and remains active when casting a Demonbane spell from the Arceuus spellbook, add +25%.

Ahrim's Damned: If equipped with the Ahrim the Blighted's equipment set and an Amulet of the damned, there's a 25% chance for any magic attack to deal 30% extra damage. Note that a player will see two different max hitsplats in-game depending if this effect is rolled or not. Additionally, this effect will never be triggered at a combat dummy. Add +30%.

Castle Wars Bracelet: If a Castle Wars bracelet was equipped at the start of the Castle Wars minigame and the player is attacking the flag bearer, add +20%.

Applied Hit

Finally, the calculated Magic damage is applied in-game and displayed in the hitsplat icon.

Post hit roll example

As briefly explained under the section "Calculating maximum Magic hit", the max hit roll isn't as straightforward as some players may expect. While a player might expect all Magic damage bonuses to be calculated into a max hit before rolling and hitting between 1 and the max hit, this isn't quite how it works. Most Magic damage bonuses are included in the max hit and then rolled, but a few bonuses apply after the roll. This can be demonstrated with a simple example. Begin the Castle Wars minigame while wearing a Castle Wars bracelet. Remove all gear and cast Fire Strike on an opponent while they're carrying your flag. Typically, the max hit would be 8 with the applied damage ranging from 1 to 8. However, because of the Castle Wars bracelet's effect is post-roll a hit of 1, 2, 3, or 4 will remain the same but a hit of 5, 6, 7, or 8 will go up by one to 6, 7, 8, or 9. This means that a damage of 5 will never be seen in-game under these conditions.

Through in-depth testing, it's known that Mark of Darkness, the Amulet of the damned's effect when worn with the Ahrim the Blighted's equipment set, and the Castle Wars Bracelet bonuses are all applied post-roll. The Tome of fire and Tome of water use to be post-roll until they were changed during Project Rebalance.
