Item ID10149
A player attacks using a salamander.

The swamp lizard is a two-handed Ranged weapon requiring level 30 in Attack, Ranged, and Magic to wield. The required ammunition for the swamp lizard is Guam tar.

Despite being able to perform Magic and Ranged attacks, use of this weapon requires the user to be within Melee range of the target, potentially reducing these attack styles' practicality.

Swamp lizards may be obtained by trapping swamp lizards east of Canifis using net traps, requiring level 29 Hunter, or by trading with other players. Successfully catching a Swamp Lizard grants 152 Hunter experience.

When using the Scorch (Slash) and Blaze (Magic) attack styles, the attack speed is 5. When using the Flare (Range) attack style, the attack speed is 4, which is similar in concept to the Rapid style of most ranged weapons, and it will use standard[1] ranged defense, similar to bows. Regardless of the selected style it can only attack in melee distance, though it can attack diagonally and across corners on walls and objects, unlike most melee weapons. This can allow it to be used to safespot certain monsters that would otherwise require flinching or ranged/magic.

In its melee mode, the swamp lizard has a chance of inflicting poison starting at 6 damage.

Warning: This is a live creature, it will run away when you die. Should this happen, you will need to buy or catch a new one.

Experience

While using the Ranged and Melee attack styles, combat experience is rewarded normally. Dissimilarly, the Magic attack style rewards experience at a halved rate (than what would normally be compensated with a base per-cast exp amount with traditional spells).

Maximum hit

Melee mode's damage potential is determined by the strength bonus of the salamander itself, which is +22 for a swamp lizard (equivalent to a mithril longsword).

Ranged mode's damage potential is determined by the Ranged strength bonus of the tar used, which is +16 for the guam tar used with a swamp lizard (equivalent to a steel arrow).

The maximum hit for magic mode uses the "magic damage bonus" of the salamander. This bonus is not visible in the equipment stats, but is equal to 56 for the swamp lizard.

The max hit (Hitmax) formula for salamanders is as shown in fig.1., where "Magic" is your visible magic level and "Bonus" is the "magic damage bonus" for the salamander, in this case 56. This gives us the formula for the swamp lizard as shown in fig.2.

The table below shows maximum hits from level 30 to level 125. Like all other magic attacks, the max hit damage can be increased by using magic damage boosting equipment.
